WAVE101 ~ Lesson 9: When does a Desire become Deceitful (video)
Hi, this is Noel. Today Denise is going to help you identify when a Desire becomes Deceitful and I will go over the 3rd Step in devotional Bible study--Forming Challenges.
You can either read the Lesson or watch the video. To take notes either print out the Lesson, follow along in the book, or use a separate piece of paper to write out the answers to the questions below.
Desire Killer: Deceitful Desires
A Grandfather told this Parable of the Wolves to his Grandson:
"There are two wolves living in my heart and they are at war with each other. One is vicious and cruel and the other is wise and kind."
"Grandfather," said the alarmed grandson, "which one will win?"
"The one I feed," said the Grandfather.
We all have well-worn paths to what we think is our help. If our help is Deceitful, it is a Desire Killer and will lead us away from finding the help God provides.
But you say, "It can't always be wrong to shop or buy a gadget." You are right. It is often very normal and healthy to do some of these things.
How do you know when a Desire is an appropriate comfort and when it is Deceitful? The Desire becomes Deceitful when you rely on it to bring fulfillment or when you consistently rely on it to numb you.
4. A Desire becomes Deceitful when you rely on it to bring

or when you rely on it to

God does not want you to continually escape. He wants you to experience comfort right where you are. God's comfort keeps you in the moment and connects you to Him in the midst of the situation. It is a strange mixture of joy and sadness. Dr. James Dobson says, "God does not give us a detour from problems, but a guided tour through them."
Skill Time: Step 3 Forming Challenges
The next step is to turn each Lesson into a question that Challenges your life. Write the questions in the Challenges panel on the next page. If you surfaced two Lessons, you should come up with two questions here.
15. Challenges: Ask and answer the question, "Where does it touch

16. You should have as many Challenges as you have

____________________________________
You are asking yourself how your life squares with each of the Lessons you surfaced. The purpose of these questions is not to evoke guilt. The purpose is to identify and explore potential ways the truth of the passage touches your life.
Here are a couple of passages from previous lessons. The Lessons we came up with are listed and the corresponding Challenges are listed beneath them. Take a look and see if you get a sense how Challenges are just restating the Lesson in the form of a question.
Psalm 28:7a The LORD is my strength and my shield.... (NASB)
Step 1: Facts ~ What do you see in the passage?

1. God is my strength.

2. God is my shield.
Step 2: Lessons ~ What can you learn from the passage?

1. What is strong about me is that God is on my side.

2. I am safe because God is on my side.
Step 3: Challenges ~ Restate each Lesson as a question that challenges you

1. Do I really believe I am strong now that God is on my side?

2. Do I really believe I am safe now that God is on my side?
Genesis 12:1 Now the LORD said to Abram, "Go forth from your country, And from your relatives And from your father's house, To the land which I will show you; (NASB)
Step 1: Facts ~ What do you see in the passage?

1. God told Abram to go without telling him where to go.
Step 2: Lessons ~ What can you learn from the passage?

1. Sometimes God asks us to take action without all the information.
Step 3: Challenges ~ Restate the Lesson as a question that challenges you

Watch the video or check the answers below to compare what you get with what we get from the passage.
Next time, Denise will talk about overcoming Deceitful Desires and I will explain Step 4 in devotional Bible study--Responses
